What changes the price
- Volume: the number of rooms and how full they are
- Stairs, lifts, long carries and parking at each end
- Travel time and minimum hours on local moves
- Distance, and dedicated truck versus backload on long moves
- Packing services and materials
- Day and date: weekends, end of month and holidays are busiest

Finder does not publish a Townsville figure, so the hourly rate uses Brisbane, the nearest Queensland benchmark. The totals by home size are national figures for weekday local moves without packing. None of these are Townsville quotes.

Extras that change the price
- Packing and unpacking by the removalist, and packing materials such as boxes, tape and mattress covers.
- Stairs, lifts and long carries at either end.
- Heavy or specialist items such as pianos, pool tables, safes and gym equipment.
- Storage if your new home is not ready.
- Weekend, end of month and holiday dates.
- Travel time from the depot, and minimum hours on local moves.
- Transit insurance, which removalists may offer or arrange at extra cost.

Deposits and upfront payment
The Queensland Office of Fair Trading advises trying to avoid upfront deposits, asking what the price covers and whether it is by time or quantity, and comparing several quotes (Queensland Government). It has taken action against removalists: in February 2023 a Brisbane removalist and its director were fined $16,000 for false and misleading representations and for wrongly accepting payment (Queensland Government).
If a removalist asks for a large deposit, ask why, what it covers and when it is refundable, and get the answer in writing.
