Long distance and interstate moves from Townsville, with dedicated truck or shared backload options quoted by volume.
Local moves and long distance or interstate moves may go to different independent removalists. Long distance requests go to an independent removalist who runs those routes, which may not be the same business that handles local Townsville moves.
There are two main ways to move a long way from Townsville.
Dedicated truck. The truck carries only your belongings and travels directly from your old home to your new one. You get fixed pickup and delivery dates and less handling. It costs more because you are paying for the whole truck and the return trip.
Backload or shared load. Your belongings share a truck with other customers heading the same way, often on a truck that would otherwise travel empty. You pay for the space you use, so it is often cheaper, but pickup and delivery happen within a window rather than on fixed dates, and goods may be handled more than once or stored at a depot along the way.
A backload suits people with flexible dates and smaller loads. A dedicated truck suits people with tight lease dates, large households or fragile items. Ask the removalist to price both if you are unsure.
Long distance moves are usually quoted by volume in cubic metres (m³) rather than by the hour. To get an accurate quote:
The Queensland Office of Fair Trading suggests comparing several quotes and asking exactly what the price covers (Queensland Government). We do not publish route prices because we have not found a reliable published figure; see the price guide for the benchmarks we do have.
We have written detailed planning guides for the three most common long distance routes from Townsville:
Distances are from australiatravelquestions.com. For moves interstate, tell us the destination city in the quote form.
The Office of Fair Trading notes that most removalists only insure their own vehicles, so consider transit or contents insurance for your belongings (Queensland Government). On a long move this matters more, because goods spend more time on the road and may be transferred between trucks.
The Townsville wet season runs from November to April, with the heaviest monsoon rain from late December to early April and a risk of tropical cyclones (BoM). The Bruce Highway can close: in February 2025 floodwaters damaged the Ed Kratzmann Bridge north of Townsville and heavy vehicles were stopped for eight days (QRA). If you are moving in the wet season, build in buffer days, check QLDTraffic, and ask the removalist how they handle delays.
Most removalists do not carry cars or pets on the same truck as your furniture. Car transport and pet transport are usually arranged separately with specialist carriers. Ask the removalist whether they can arrange it or recommend someone, and book early around busy periods.
If your employer is paying for the move, check what the relocation package covers before you book, such as packing, storage, insurance or a set budget. When you are ready, request a long distance quote and an independent removalist will contact you.
